International Interprofessional Wound Care Group update

01 August 2022

The World Union of Wound Healing Society (WUWHS) Congress, held in March 2022 in Abu Dhabi, was the event that the International Interprofessional Wound Care Group (IIWCG) had long been working for to bring the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region on par with wound care initiatives around the world. It exceeded our wishes, as clinicians in the region not only embraced this unique learning opportunity, but also shared similar stories about clinical challenges over a cup of coffee, or a meal, with someone from the other side of the world, who they'd never met before. New friends were made and networks formed, with many eyes starting to see solutions rather than only overwhelming problems.

It is in this opening of horizons, we have realised that the energy generated by a one-off Congress cannot be maintained if it is not formally supported by follow-up events. The power of realisation cannot last indefinitely and needs further action to maintain. We therefore mapped out the way forward for IIWCG, creating high-level, enjoyable learning events for clinicians in the region. Continuing professional education will be the focus for the next two years, with attention given to the expansion of advanced wound care skills in line with the rapid development of wound care science and technology over the past few years.
